Golf, Outer Banks Style
Are you an avid golfer or do you golf for exercise? Whatever your reason for playing golf, grab some friends and come experience the golf courses of the Outer Banks. Check out the following public golf courses in Outer Banks that are either professional courses or locals’ favorites. They are also open year round.
Sea Scape Golf Links is located on Eckner Street, right off of Highway 158 in Kitty Hawk. It was designed by Art Wall who won the Master’s Tournament in 1959 in Augusta, Georgia. The figure-eight design spans through sand dunes and forest land. The club house offers golf club rentals and has a fully stocked pro shop for all your golfing needs. Also located in the club house is The Sandtrap Tavern. Have a nice, hearty breakfast before golfing or a good, healthy lunch afterwards. Make your golf vacation complete by staying at the adjacent SPM Resort, Sea Scape Beach & Golf Villas. Contact the resort for available golf packages. Come and enjoy this public golf course, year round.
The Pointe Golf Club is just minutes away in Powell’s Point, three miles north on Highway 158 across the Wright Memorial Bridge. Hands-on architect, Russell Breeden designed and worked on this golf course in the early 90’s which was a former sod farm. The course features A-1 bent grass which creates a higher quality putting surface with fast greens and great conditioning. This is a great public golf course that you can enjoy year round. If you are not up for a round of golf, take advantage of the driving range or practice facilities that are also available. Their on-site pro shop offers a wide range of products for all your golfing needs. You may want to pick up a souvenir as well. Although not offering full service meals (snack bar service only) during the winter check out Greenside Bar & Grille located inside the club house. This is a great place to relax and unwind after your golf game.
The Carolina Club (the sister club to The Pointe) is located approximately 13 ½ miles north on Highway 158 across the Wright Memorial Bridge in Grandy. This public golf course is a favorite among the locals and is open year round. It was also designed by Russell Breeden and opened in the late 90s. This course features L-93 bent grass and is equipped with five sets of tees for golfers at all skill levels. For your dining needs visit tuckers’ Sports Bar & Grille located in the club house. With six wide screen televisions, it is a great place to catch up on sports while enjoying your meal. Be sure to check the course website for seasonal hours and menu items available.
Kilmarlic Golf Club is located off of Highway 158 approximately four miles on the other side of the Wright Memorial Bridge in Powell’s Point. It is nestled within 605 acres of forest and wetlands helping to make this a challenging course. Don’t be surprised if you lose some golf balls in the hazardous 15 acres of ponds and lakes throughout this golf course. This public golf course was designed by architect, Tom Steele and is open year round. Because this course is kept in tournament playing condition, Kilmarlic was able to host the North Carolina Open in 2004 and 2009. Visit the Black Tartan Tap Room restaurant for a meal and drinks after your golf game.
